MGM Agrees to Pay Las Vegas Shooting Victims Up to $800 Million

Just two days after the second anniversary of the shooting massacre that left 58 people dead and injured many more in Las Vegas, MGM Resorts agreed to pay up to $800 million to settle lawsuits brought against them by victims and their families. MGM owns the Mandalay Bay hotel, which is where sniper Stephen Paddock opened fire from his room on the 32nd floor, raining bullets onto a massive crowd assembled at the outdoor Harvest 91 country music festival across the street. (Paddock was killed shortly thereafter.)

As The New York Times notes, it was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. “While nothing will be able to bring back the lives lost or undo the horrors so many suffered on that day, this settlement will provide fair compensation for thousands of victims and their families,” said Roger Eglet, one of the lawyers for the victims, in a statement.
